Glenn Murcutt & Angelo Candalepas to Design World-Class Residence 271 Elizabeth Street

With the development application submitted, the development is slated to become one of Sydney most prestigious residential properties.


We are thrilled to announce that Glenn Murcutt and Angelo Candalepas from Candalepas Associates have partnered to lead the architectural design of their iconic development opportunity, the Hyde Park Inn, located at 271 Elizabeth Street, Sydney.

This unique collaboration, being Murcutt Candalepas, is the first time the pair will work together on a project for the City of Sydney and will see both parties drawing upon their expertise to deliver a truly remarkable development. Angelo Candalepas has been recognised in Australia and internationally for many notable projects including The Point in Pyrmont, The Surry on Elizabeth St, Thoma House, The Hellenic Club and the National Gallery of Australia, and plans to utilise his extensive experience within the City of Sydney to bring 271 Elizabeth Street to life.

Glenn Murcutt, one of Australia’s most awarded architects and the only Australian to win the Pritzker Architectural Prize, has worked on many significant projects throughout his career including The Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre, Donaldson House, Walsh House and Australian Islamic Centre. Murcutt plans to express his philosophy of “touching the earth lightly through sensitive design” with 271 Elizabeth Street, his first City of Sydney project.

The design of 271 Elizabeth Street will deliver 53 world class, premium residences along with ground-floor retail that will see it become an iconic park side address, rivalling international property standards amongst the likes of London’s No. 1 Grosvenor Square and New York’s Beckford House and 1228 Madison Avenue.

The design will also draw upon the architectural fenestration qualities of the Anzac Memorial and the broader work of Bruce Dellit to recognise and embrace the significance of the property’s locale including adjacency to Hyde Park.

271 Elizabeth Street offers an incredible natural outlook to the northeast across the lush tree canopy of Hyde Park to St Mary’s Cathedral as well as over the Royal Botanic Gardens to Sydney Harbour. Offering a dual frontage to Castlereagh Street, the leafy outlook is juxtaposed against a more civic and urban city outlook to the west, presenting a unique contrast with much opportunity to be challenged architecturally.
